19th Julia Margaret Cameron Award: Fine Art Series, Honourable Mention
Creative re-workings of a found lantern slide depicting the monument of Sir Francis Drake, ‘Circumnavigating the World’, located on Plymouth Hoe. Various photographic processes transform the original image to reflect our current relationship with history. Each process alters the depiction of the monument to visually deconstruct Drake as an explorer, Naval officer, privateer, sea captain, politician and slave trader. The images consider whose narratives the photograph and the monument preserve and whose they suppress.
